It’s not an average, everyday mug, even though it functions that way. Behind the scenes, it took one year to design. There was loads of back and forth, modeling and tweaking with &Open’s team because ceramics have many limitations. On its surface, there are five different glazes. After each one is individually hand cast and fired, those different colors are applied individually — with time to dry in between — all by hand by a man named Keith. He’s known as the “master potter” around here because he’s worked in the industry since he was 15. And he’s currently 65! When he makes 100 mugs, he actually touches them 500 times.

Emily Johnson is the founder of 1882 Ltd and has collaborated with &Open on gifting projects.
